Methods of accomodating cultural differences

A variety of viewpoints along with the wide-ranging personal and professional experience of an international team can offer new perspectives that inspire colleagues to see the workplace—and the world—differently.Diversity of thought has been shown to breed creativity and drive innovation, helping to solve problems and meet customer needs in new and exciting ways.From the Virgin Group to Disney and Pricewaterhouse Coopers, organizations across industries are embracing the benefits of a diverse workforce.But with benefits, necessarily come challenges of working across borders, cultures, and languages.Employers are responsible for their workers' physical and psychological health and well-being and should encourage tolerance and respect for cultural differences in the workplace.

[columns] Our culture influences the way in which we see the world.Since speech is a way to express group membership, people adopt convergence or divergence in communication to "signal a salient group distinctiveness, so as to reinforce a social identity".Communication accommodation thus, becomes a tool to emphasize group distinctiveness in a positive way, and strengthen the individual's social identity.Special focus is placed in this paper on ethnic conflicts, whether domestic or international.Culture, as defined in this paper, may be a significant or insignificant influence in any conflict, being closely associated with the notion of identity.The communication accommodation theory has broadened this theory to include not only speech but also the "non-verbal and discursive dimensions of social interaction".
